„New York meets Untergreith“

The Klanghaus Untergreith presents a special focus on contemporary sound art from New York and its international echoes.
For the third time the internationally renowned American composer Phill Niblock is guest in the Klanghaus Untergreith. He will introduce new compositions.

The Canadian video artist Katherine Liberovskaya, who has been working with Phill Niblock for many years, will play in the duo with Mia Zabelka at Eviolin and electronic devices. A mini-camera, attached to the arm, creates visuals of the gestural play of the violinists, which are edited and transformed live by the video artist.
The turntablists Maria Chavez from New York, a student of Pauline Oliveros, the world-famous composer who died last year, also presented her work in the Klanghaus in 2015 and will particiapte this time in a duet with Sandy Ewen from Berlin.

Roberto Paci Dalo, clarinetist and sound artist from Italy, is recognized for his subtle sound art projects and radio works. He will develop a sound work dedicated to the Klanghaus.
The German composer and performer Peter Wiessenthaner, who has performed several times in the New York performance series “Experimental Intermedia” initiated by Phill Niblock, will present an audiovisual composition with an electronically controlled microtonal bass quartet.

In cooperation with KulturKontakt Austria, Enrique Mendoza from Mexico is invited as an artist-in-residence of the Klanghaus Untergreith in 2017. He developed a multi-channel sound installation especially for the Klanghaus.

Nordklanglicht

Klanghaus Untergreith presents a second focus on Norwegian contemporary sound art as part of Klangfest Spring….
Over the last few years, Norway has become a very active center of current artistic developments. Under the motto “Nordklanglicht”, internationally renowned Norwegian musicians and composers will meet Austrian, British and German artists as part of the Klangfest / Frühling on 13 and 14 May 2017. The Festival presents live electroacoustic music and sound art, which focus on improvisation and experimental arts.

Das Klanghaus Untergreith präsentiert im Rahmen des Klangfest Frühling zum zweiten Mal einen Schwerpunkt auf norwegische zeitgenössische Klangkunst.
Norwegen hat sich in den letzten Jahren zu einem sehr aktiven Zentrum der aktuellen künstlerischen Entwicklungen etabliert. Unter dem Motto „Nordklanglicht“ werden international bekannte norwegische Musiker und Komponisten auf österreichische, britische und deutsche Künstler im Rahmen des Klangfest / Frühling am 13. und 14. Mai 2017 treffen.
Präsentiert werden live-elektroakustische Musik und Sound Art, die Improvisation und Experiment in den Mittelpunkt stellen.

Oker (Fredrik Rasten – Gitarre, Torstein Lavik Larsen – Trompete, Adrian Fiskum Myhr – Kontrabass, Jan Martin Gismervik – Schlagzeug) ist ein akustisches improvisierendes Quartett aus Oslo. Die Musik verbindet Klänge aus erweiterten Instrumental-Techniken mit offenen Klangfarben und dekonstruierten Grooves. Das Ensemble balanciert zwischen luftigen Gesten und dichten kollektiven Klangblöcken.

Benjamin Fingeer ist einer der international bekanntesten Elektronikmusiker Norwegens, der Tourneen durch Europa, Asien und Amerika regelmäßig absolviert. Er wird im Klanghaus Untergreith eine neue elektroakustische Arbeit vorstellen.

Das deutsch-österreichische Trio Meinrad Kneer, Andreas Willers und Mia Zabelka besteht seit 2014 und wird eine akustische Improvisation auf Violine, Gitarre und Kontrabass präsentieren.
Die britisch-österreichische Klangkünstlerin und Bassistin Zahra Mani stellt eine Komposition vor, die sie als Artist in Residence 2016 im Klanghaus realisiert hat.

Sonic Traces of Refugees

“Phonart” is a radio art / sound art project initiated by Mia Zabelka and Zahra Mani. Since 2010, Phonart has engaged on an experimental music level with the disappearance of marginalized languages and isolated modes of communication in Europe.
The current project is an artistic interpretation of the routes that refugees follow through the Balkans. The paths and roads provided the basis for a graphic score that will be performed by an ensemble put together for this project, with musicians from Austria, France, Germany and the Balkan countries. Fences, borderlines, chaos and camps resonate in the interpretative sounding of the migrant routes….

The radio network project will be performed simultaneously in Maribor, Slovenia and at Klanghaus Untergreith in the Austrian Steiermark (Styria) in cooperation with Internet Radio Waltl and the Slovene Radio Voice of Underground. The artists interact between the two locations in public radio space. Radiowaves supercede borders and boundaries. In the border zone between Austria and Slovenia, languages and radio stations merge.

The participants at Klanghaus Untergreith are:
Luise Volkmann, a yound German composer and saxophonist who also wrote the score for PHONART.
Jean-Marc Foussat, one of France’s best known sound artists and improvisers, who collaborates with musicians from all over the world and performs at international festivals.
Mia Zabelka, violinist, vocalist, sound artist, composer and director of the Klanghaus Untergreith.

The participatns at radio Voice of Underground are:
Zahra Mani, musician and composer from Pakistan and the UK who lives and works in Austria. Her long artistic and curatorial collaborations with Mia Zabelka include, amongst other projects, numerous border-crossing radio works.

Samo Kutin, one of Slovenia’s best know sound artists who develops sonic objects from unexpected materials that form the basis of his pieces and performances. His collboration with Zahra Mani in Maribor is their first performance together.
A group of refugees resident in Styria will cater the event in Klanghaus with multi-ethnic food. The meal for artists and visitors is an opportunity for personal exchange between the PHONART participants.

The performance will conclude with a meditation session led by Styrian sound artist Catherine Burggraf.

This event has been sponsored by the Cultural department of the State of Styria in the context of the 2016 call for border-crossing art and cultural projects “Traces of Friendship”.

The Sound of Europe

This autumn’s Klangfest will be held from 28 to 30 October and is dedicated to “The Sound of Europe”. It is part of the project entitled “ECHOES FROM INVISIBLE LANDSCAPES“. This project is in the hands of the newly founded Echo Kollektiv Netzwerk (comprising Enterprise Z, Wieser Verlag publishers, the University of Klagenfurt, Zveza Mink Tolmin and Mani doo) with the support of the EACEA Creative Europe programme and covers the period from 2016 to 2018. The 2-year project challenges the local population and international artists as “agents of cultural reflection” to consider and rethink the status quo of social structures against the background of our relations to our environment in the Alpine Adriatic region b…etween Austria, Slovenia and Croatia.
“Landscapes” stands for tangible and intangible heritage, for culture as the basis for individualism and group identity. “Echoes” emanate from individual and collective histories of people and their natural or designed surroundings. Artists and scientists are invited to listen to these echoes, to record and process them. They develop new projects that will then in turn become objects or ideas of resonance themselves and send out their own echoes to a wider audience across local and national borders. This means that the festival serves as a catalyst for further investigation of echoes. ECHOES is a practical and artistic approach to broadening the awareness of culture in society with a view to the Alpine Adriatic region and offering a network model that can be extended to other regions.
Klanghaus Untergreith’s first contribution to this initiative is the project “The Sound of Europe” where sounds, tones and noise were collected on a trip across Europe and compiled to form a sound map of the continent. These recordings made in cities including, among others, London, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Bucharest, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Lisbon and Brussels reflect the cultural and social diversity of Europe. One central aim of this collection of sounds was to locate artistic and cultural activities that are largely undiscovered and thus “invisible”. “The Sound of Europe” is a sound installation that will be presented at the Sound Gallery of Klanghaus Untergreith on the three festival days. Artists and creatives who entered into resonance on these trips will present their work. The Klanghaus lends itself as the resonating body that amplifies the echoes generated by the agents of cultural reflection and making them heard across geographic regional border.

Shadow of Green

Circumspection, everywhere green in all imaginable nuances
the fields alone, so many tones, the green colours of those who have survived over a century, changing with the daylight, with a mood, each of their sort
Differently, the young shoots and twigs are juicy and curious, the moss velvety, dark

The glaring bright leaves of the birches contrast with the deeper green beech, green-black conifers with glowing shoots suffuse the multifarious green

the view, looking into the greens of the indigenous vegetation surrounding the Klanghaus, is a score presented by nature, a collection of tones waiting to be played by the participating musicians.

Mani doo will host Klanghaus Untergreith / Enterprise Z with the first foreign edition of “Klangfest” at Hrelji 45 / Stancijamani
“Kružni tok” is Croatian for roundabout and stands as a metaphor for a central meeting point open in all directions, allowing a flow to and from a rotation of ideas, aesthetics and viewpoints, bringing diverse cultures and genres together – a circle to and from which concepts, artworks and people are carried.
The roundabout is a confluence of artistic paths and passages, conduits of cultural practice.
The artists and visitors who come together… over the Pentecost weekend in Hrelji will converge from various different directions and carry their experiences out again, transporting living art and culture, perception and dialogue.
Enterprise Z and Mani doo come together as a hub, a cultural centre beyond and across borders to host a range of artists, regular visitors and new audiences in a cultural event characterised by a fundamental openness.
